Mount Lawley
Mount Lawley is one of Perth’s most established inner suburbs, sitting just north east of the city centre. It is known for its period character, its tree-lined streets and a main street that has become one of the best known eating and drinking strips in Perth.
The housing
The suburb is built on Federation and Californian bungalows, many on generous blocks behind mature street trees, with plenty of them beautifully restored. Closer to the main roads you will find apartments, townhouses and villas, which is where a lot of the suburb’s buying activity sits. It is a suburb where a character house and a modern apartment can be a few hundred metres apart.
Beaufort Street
Beaufort Street runs the length of the suburb and carries the restaurants, cafes, small bars and shops, along with the Astor Theatre. It gives Mount Lawley something a lot of suburbs do not have, which is a genuine high street you can walk to.
Parks and open space
Hyde Park sits immediately to the south west in Highgate, with its lakes and mature Moreton Bay figs, and Mount Lawley Golf Course lies to the north east. Between them there is a lot of established greenery for a suburb this close to town.
Getting around
Mount Lawley station is on the Midland line, and bus routes run frequently along Beaufort Street and Walcott Street into the city.
Education
Mount Lawley Senior High School is in the suburb, and a number of well regarded private schools sit close by.
What is coming
Edith Cowan University has moved its Mount Lawley operations to its new city campus, and the 18.6 hectare site it occupied is being redeveloped by DevelopmentWA into a mixed use neighbourhood with housing, commercial and community space. In a suburb where very little land comes up at all, it is the most significant change on the horizon.
