Bedford
Bedford is a City of Bayswater suburb on Beaufort Street, north-east of central Perth. It began as Bedford Park, a townsite proclaimed in 1937, and today it mixes interwar brick homes, post-war State Housing and small shopping strips on Grand Promenade and Beaufort Street.

The housing
Building took off after Beaufort Street was extended into the Bayswater district in 1924, and the City of Bayswater’s thematic history records a building boom in Bedford Park through the Depression. Houses at 104, 106 and 108 Salisbury Street are on the City’s heritage list as examples of early Bedford Park. After the Second World War the Commonwealth and State governments built in Bedford Park, so post-war State Housing homes sit alongside the earlier brick houses.
Shops
The Grand Promenade shops were upgraded by the City in 2023 with outdoor dining areas, murals and lighting.
Parks and open space
Beaufort Park, on the corner of Beaufort and Drummond Streets, has a hall for hire, a playground and a lawn used for cricket and soccer. RA Cook Reserve at 285 Coode Street has grounds for football, cricket, softball and hurling, a pavilion and an off-lead dog area outside sport times. Remembrance Park, on the corner of Salisbury and Beaufort Streets, holds the Bedford War Memorial.
Getting around
Beaufort Street carries Transperth route 950, a high frequency bus between Morley and the city, UWA and QEII Medical Centre. Morley Station on the Ellenbrook Line, opened in December 2024, is nearby in the Tonkin Highway median under the Broun Avenue bridge. Check Transperth for current times.
Education
Chisholm Catholic College, for Years 7 to 12, is at 1104 Beaufort Street. St Peter’s Primary School gives its address as Inglewood and serves the Bedford and Inglewood parish, and Hillcrest Primary School is nearby in Bayswater. Check the Department of Education’s intake areas for a specific address.
